    Next-generation bainitic steel with remarkable properties was the central theme of a colloquium hosted by the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Pretoria on the 4th of December 2017. Sir Harry Bhadeshia, a global leader in metallurgy and the Tata Steel Professor at Cambridge University, was the main speaker. Sir Prof Bhadeshia was on a visit to South Africa as a result of an application made by the Microscopy Society of Southern Africa and the trip was funded through a NRF instrument.

Brief career history:
Dr Molefi Motuku is currently the Group Executive: Research & Development at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Prior to joining the CSIR, he was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA). He managed the Advance Materials (Physical Metallurgy) Division at Mintek and was later appointed General Manager: Research & Development before joining NMISA in 2010. Before joining Mintek, he was the Director of the Fort Hare Institute of Technology (FHIT); and prior to that, he was an Assistant Professor of Mechanical & Materials Engineering at Tuskegee University, USA. He spent over four years at Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Co. Ltd, Rustenburg Platinum Holdings in the mid-eighties.
Dr Motuku has over seventeen years of solid and hands-on strategic, business, research & development, leadership and management experience in science and technology; minerals and mining; renewable energy solutions, and the advanced engineering environment.
He is familiar with the National System of Innovation, and has experience in working with local and foreign governments at all levels, specifically the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Department of Trade & Industry (the dti), the Department of Mineral Resources as well as the mining industry.
