We caught up with Alistair MacFarlane from Tomahee at the SAIMM2016 New technology and Innovation Colloquium.

As the conference was drawing to a close, Alistair shared his satisfaction with the proceeding as a whole. The conference was well attended with several thought leaders presenting some innovative research

 

We checked in with Lorrance Ngwenyama, from University of Pretoria. Overall, he was impressed by the groundbreaking innovation discussed in today's proceedings. He will also be presenting tomorrow and looks forward to sharing his research with the rest of the delegation.

 

Wrapping up the final session at #SAIMM2016, we had a chat with Katlego M Letsoalo from the Chamber of Mines South Africa.

He shares his thoughts on the day's activities and gives us the low down on the Phakisa project that is currently underway.

 

Frik Fourie, the head of business improvement for Anglo American Platinum, spoke to us about the mining industry and the importance of innovation in this sector.

  • Lemur secures State anchor offtaker for Madagascar project
    Aim-listed Bushveld Minerals’ coal and energy subsidiary Lemur has secured a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Madagascar State-owned utility Jiro sy Rano Malagasy (Jirama). Lemur is developing the Imaloto power project, an integrated thermal coal mining and independent power producer (IPP) asset in Madagascar.

    ASX-listed Bass Metals is nearing the completion of Stage 1 of the optimisation programme for its Graphmada large flake graphite mine, in Madagascar, and expects its first production next month. In an operational update, Bass CEO Tim McManus reported on Thursday that first production would come from the recommencement of drying and packaging operations in December.
  • Sasol’s new strategy shuns GTL as specialty chemicals emerge as key growth driver
    Chemicals and energy group Sasol is preparing to sell several assets, including its Canadian shale gas assets, following an overhaul of its corporate strategy, which eschews any further greenfield gas-to-liquids (GTL) investments in favour of smaller acquisitions and projects of between $500-million and $1-billion. In future, the group’s growth would be targeted towards opportunities in the areas of specialty chemicals, Southern African fuel retailing and gas and oil exploration and production in Mozambique and West Africa. Oil refining, GTL, commodity chemicals and renewable-energy were no longer viewed as growth drivers. It would, however, seek to leverage renewable-energy to enable it to reduce emissions.
