  • Barrick Gold, Tanzania reach agreement, govt to take stake in mines
    Barrick Gold has agreed that Tanzania will own a 16% stake in three gold mines operated by Barrick's Acacia Mining, the company and a government minister announced on Thursday. Barrick chairperson John Thornton told a news conference in the Tanzanian capital that the company had also agreed to pay Tanzania $300-million as a show of good faith.
  • Sixth death in platinum belt in three months
    British platinum mine giant Lonmin has raised "deep concerns" following the death of employee Tholakele Dlunga this week, the sixth in the platinum belt in the North West in the past three months. "Lonmin is deeply concerned by the recent fatal shootings across the platinum belt. The company is aware of at least six deaths and three injuries in various shootings across the region in the past three months, including three at Lonmin," company CEO Ben Magara said in a statement on Thursday.
  • FBI opens investigation into South Africa's Guptas – FT
    The FBI has opened an investigation into US links to South Africa's Guptas, escalating a scandal over the family's alleged use of a friendship with President Jacob Zuma to control state businesses, the Financial Times said on Thursday. Separately, Britain's banking regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), said it was in contact with two UK banks over any possible links to the Gupta family.
