Fines Beneficiation, De-Watering & Agglomeration 2010

  • Date: 16 - 17 November 2010
  • Venue: Misty Hills Conference Centre, Cradle Of Humankind, Gauteng
  • CPD: 2

Numerous industrial processes require their products in a coarse form to simplify matters of handling, transportation and feed for downstream applications.

There are on-going investigations into the beneficiation, de-watering and agglomeration of fines, which will achieve ease of handling and mechanical strength for downstream processing.

Until recently, fines in South-Africa have been discarded into slime dams and underground workings, which are now considered to be environmentally less acceptable.

Ultra-fine coal (i.e. <500 μm) is very difficult to handle, in the base metal industry special attention has been given to the flotation of fines (i.e. <10 μm) and in the iron ore industry the -6 mm fraction is considered to be fines, which is processed in the sinter plant; however, the issue of the slimes fraction (i.e. <150 mm) in the slime dams are still not addressed in terms of economic utilization.

The world is striving for sustainable development and efficient utilization of energy resources. However, the focus shifts to methods necessary to prepare these fines for downstream thermal processes, for example: filters, thickeners, pumps and dryers. Moreover, downstream thermal processes do not always accept fine material, due to impairment of gas permeability, carry over or loss of product and the now critical environmental impact.

It is important to discuss the economically and technically viable methods that can be used for the upgrade, de-watering, drying and agglomeration of fines during this conference.
