The Future Of Sinking Vertical Tunnels
Written by Raymond Van Der BergThis conference and workshop is in response to the industry being under immense pressure to sink shafts in safer and more efficient ways.
The global call for no harm has to be taken very seriously.
We can sink shafts without hurting people, however to repeatedly achieve this, we need to critically examine all aspects related to the sinking process.
The way in which we conduct the entire project, right from mine concept study through to commissioning and handover needs to be considered. Shaft sinking is not only about the sinking cycle.
There are many diverse factors that influence the sinking process including: business drivers in the concept phase, mining methodologies and technology alternatives in the pre-feasibility stages, cost and timing parameters in the feasibility as well as partner selection, technical criteria and management systems during the execution phase.
The purpose of this conference and workshop will be to gain an understanding from mining companies, sinking contractors and EPCM organizations on their perception of the current process.
The idea is to look at current best practice and to raise suggestions on how to improve the process using experiences collectively gained worldwide.
At the very least the conference must identify areas of action in order to plan for improvements going forward.
Otherwise, deeper ore resources may remain beyond our nations’ reach for the foreseeable future.

The previous two conference Calgary and Cairnes ( By and Co-products and the environment).
The 4th World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB4)
Written by AdministratorThe Fourth World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB4) will be held in Cape Town, South Africa during October 2009. WCSB4 follows the first three successful WCSB conferences held in Esbjerg (2003), Brisbane (2005) and Porto Alegre (2007), and, in keeping with the wishes of the first WCSB committee to hold the conference on all the major continents, the next venue will be Africa i.e. Cape Town. The WCSB was initiated in Denmark as a forum for interaction between sampling practitioners from different disciplines operating in a diversity of fields such as mining, industry, agriculture, environmental sciences, medicine, pharmacy and others.
The Colloquium introduces the best students to the mining industry at the threshold of their career and to allows them the exposure to communicate their work to a professional audience. This year, students from the mining and metallurgical departments of the Universities of the Witwatersrand, Pretoria, and Johannesburg together with metallurgical students from the Tswane and Vaal Universities of Technology will present their final projects on the 19th of October 2009 at the Sanlam Auditorium in Pretoria.
The SAIMM wishes to reach further into the mining industry in 2009, and to persuade more mining and metallurgical professionals to attend and see the caliber of young person’s about to embark on their careers in the mining industry. This has become more important, especially since the demand for mining engineers and metallurgists has risen so dramatically in recent years.
A cocktail party will be held after the event.
