Brief career history:
Bekir Genc is a Professor at the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. He has over 25 years of professional experience in the mining industry spread across academia and consulting. His research Interests are spontaneous combustion and coal research. Bekir is a Fellow of the SAIMM, is registered as a professional mining engineer, is also a member of the COALTECH Steering Committee (mining & geology) and is also a member of the international Society of Mining Professors. Prof Genc presented papers at international conferences and authored high-impact peer reviewed journal papers. Bekir is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the SAIMM, Minerals (MDPI) and the International Journal of Mining Science and Technology.

Brigadier Stokes Memorial Award

In 1980 the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy instituted a prestigious award to commemorate Brigadier Stokes for his outstanding and unique contribution to the South African Mining Industry over a period of many years. This award consists of a Platinum medal. The award is made to an individual for the very highest achievement in the South African mining and metallurgical industry, and is not necessarily based on technical considerations.
