The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) expresses its profound sadness and concern at the recent loss of the lives of women in South Africa. Our thoughts are with the families, friends, colleagues, and communities affected by these tragic events.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder that safety remains a critical societal challenge. Every person should have the right to live, work, travel, and participate in their communities free from fear, intimidation, violence, or harm.

As a professional body committed to fostering diversity, inclusion, and belonging, SAIMM believes that creating safer communities requires the collective efforts of all members of society. While personal vigilance is important, lasting change can only be achieved through a culture rooted in dignity, respect, accountability, and care for one another.

The mining and metallurgical industry has made meaningful progress in advancing diversity and inclusion, yet we recognise that there is still much work to be done. We all have a responsibility to challenge behaviours and attitudes that undermine the safety, wellbeing, and dignity of women and vulnerable members of society.

We encourage our members, volunteers, partners, and stakeholders to:

Promote respect, inclusion, and dignity in all professional and personal interactions.
Speak out against harassment, discrimination, intimidation, and violence.
Support initiatives that create safer and more inclusive workplaces and communities.
Look out for one another and foster environments where everyone feels valued, heard, and protected.
Lead by example in demonstrating the values of respect, empathy, and accountability.

Safety is not solely the responsibility of any one individual, organisation, or institution. It is a shared responsibility that requires awareness, action, and commitment from all of us.

The SAIMM reaffirms its commitment to advancing an industry and a society where everyone, regardless of gender, can participate fully, contribute confidently, and live free from fear.

Together, we can help build workplaces, communities, and a future where safety, respect, and inclusion are non-negotiable.
