Topic: Fibre Optic Monitoring for Dam Leakage and Slope Stability – European Case Studies
Presenter: Axel Fabritius, General Manager, Solexperts/GTC Kappelmeyer
Date: 2 December 2020
This a free webinar – The webinar is sponsored by Groundwork Consulting (Pty) Ltd, Solexpert’s partner for Southern Africa.
Solexperts is a precision geomonitoring company based in Switzerland. The 70 year old company provides innovative and client-oriented solutions for geotechnical and hydrogeological projects worldwide through its divisions, its own offices and its partners.
In 2017 the Solexperts Group was expanded further with the acquisition of GTC - Kappelmeyer, a fibre optics measurement technology company with more than 20 years of experience in this highly specialised field.
The Temperature Sounding Method, developed and patented by GTC in 1991, is applied worldwide in waste deposits, construction and hydraulic engineering and pipeline monitoring. In addition, Solexperts/GTC- Kappelmeyer GmbH is a distributor of Measurand’s Shape Accelerometer Array technology.
In 2014 GTC developed a new fibre optic cable method that can be inserted into small diameter tubes and form a loop, enabling light to travel in both directions. Retrofitting of fibre optic cables has been conducted to depths in excess of 30 m and lengths greater than 500 m, which enables a two-dimensional view of temperature distribution within a dam to be monitored remotely. More than 100 hydraulic structures worldwide have now been equipped with Solexperts/GTC – Kappelmeyer fibre optic monitoring systems.
This webinar presents a number of European case studies where fibre optic cable technology has been successfully deployed for temperature (leakage detection) and strain (slope stability) monitoring. The presenter is Axel Fabritius, Manager of Solexperts/GTC – Kappelmeyer from Karlsruhe in Germany.
Axel holds a Masters degree in geophysics from the Oregon State University in the US, and he is a global specialist in leakage detection and structural monitoring in levees, dams, tailing dams, pipelines, deep excavations pits and shafts. He’s keen interest in fibre optic monitoring (temperature and strain) in dams and structures, has led to his knowledge and expertise being shared through the publication of more than 20 conference and journal papers.

Topic: The Pursuit of the Digital Twin in African Mining
Speaker Profile: Jamie is CEO of pan-African mining technology platform Dwyka Mining Services with offices in South Africa and Botswana. Delivering cutting-edge solutions through the adoption and adaptation to the latest mining technologies with a focus on improving safety, health and environmental conditions, DMS is supporting Africa’s leading miner’s digitalisation journeys across the continent.
Topic info: Digitalization of mining assets into highly visual formats is key to unlocking hidden value by solving a widening skills gap and growing safety mandate. DMS has partnered with global pioneers in the remote sensing and visualization (UI) industry to deliver mixed reality capture and digital twin capabilities that augment mining team’s sight on- and off-site. This session will focus on digital twin developments and how these are applicable in African mining. Drilling down into the detail we will unpack real-world examples and a case study using Emesent’s Hovermap drone for GPS-denied scanning capability used to map the previously inaccessible and deliver ROI for the client.
