Physical Beneficiation 2013 Conference

19-21 November 2013 | Misty Hills Conference Centre, Cradle of Humankind

This conference is a follow up to the SAIMM Physical Beneficiation conference held in
2010. Physical Beneficiation not only covers the mineral processing areas of dense
medium separation (DMS) and gravity concentration but also magnetic separation
and electrostatic separation. These processes are widely used in the Southern African
mining industry.

Dense medium separation (DMS) is critical to the operation of coal and diamond
beneficiation plants. It is also utilised in iron ore, manganese, chromite and andalusite
beneficiation as well as pre-concentration for PGM-bearing UG2 ore.

Gravity concentration plays an important role in the processing of diamonds, coal,
gold, titanium minerals (ilmenite and rutile), zircon, chromite, iron ore and manganese.

Magnetic separation is key to the success of DMS by ensuring efficient recovery and
recycle of the dense medium, namely magnetite and ferrosilicon. It features in iron ore
recovery circuits and beneficiation of vanadium bearing magnetite. It is an important
component in the concentration and separation of ilmenite, rutile and zircon. It is used
for removing iron impurities from industrial minerals.

Electrostatic separation is an important component in the concentration and
separation of ilmenite, rutile and zircon.

Technical Visits

The following technical visits are planned for 21 November 2013

South Export Plant
South Export Plant is a wholly owned BECSA Coal processing plant located approximately 25km east of Witbank in Mpumalanga province. The plant was established to succeed the now extinct, less efficient Douglas plant and to enable BHP Billiton to maintain energy coal exports from the combined Douglas colliery and the MMS colliery while simultaneously fulfilling domestic contractual commitments.

The plant was designed in partnership with DRA and commissioned in July 2010. The design of the plant is very contemporary, consisting entirely of a complex of cyclones as the main beneficiation units. The plant comprises a significant annual design capacity of 14mta throughput, rated at 2000t per hour. This is a two modular coal processing plant consisting of a double stage beneficiation process.

The plant primarily produces export product and further process the arising discard through a secondary stage to produce a middlings product for the inland market. The nominal ROM top size into the plant is 50mm which is a crushed product from a three stage crushing process consisting of Mineral Sizers and a rotary breaker as a secondary crusher. The plant is fed by a common rotary distributor which evenly distributes the feed between the two modules. Dense Medium Separation cyclones beneficiate the relatively coarse and small's material (50mm - 0.5mm) and spirals separators used for fine materials (0.5mm- 0.150mm) separation. Ultrafine material recovered from the plant is sent to slurry cells for temporary storage and water recovery. This material is later reclaimed and dumped in designated pits.

A unique future of the plant is the usage of large sized equipment resulting in smaller foot print area and both lower capital and operational costs. The large sized washing units include but are not limited to large diameter cyclones (1150mm), 4.2 x 8.5 m Banana screens and 320l pumps.
