Water and its relationship with the mining industry is a topical and fiercely debated subject as the sector faces many water related challenges today.
Water-related applications have been the driving force for many innovations in the mining, and these were subsequently adopted and applied in other
sectors such as construction and tunnelling across the globe. Newcomen’s application of the steam engine which helped to dewater the Cornish tin mines, cementation technology which arose from the West Driefontein flood of 1964 and the development of water powered rock drills are just three examples of
such innovations.
Natural resource constraints dominate thinking about water related applications today, and the focus on mining and water now primarily concerns the
impact of mining and processing on the supply and quality of the water resources. Recent headlines such as ‘Johannesburg is facing the poisonous
consequences of gold mining’ and ‘Toxic radioactive drainage is oozing from old mines’ reflect public fears and concerns to which industry must respond appropriately. In addition, in the remote areas of sub-Saharan Africa mines are challenged to secure a sustainable supply of water, develop methods to use
water sustainably and take proper account of the water needs of other stakeholders.
This conference will seek to explore and define water and mining related challenges within the southern African region, propose solutions and possible
funding methodologies. Case studies will also be presented to demonstrate lessons learnt. The organising committee invites you to submit
papers on any aspects of water but hope that the following topics will be covered.
Keynote speakers are currently being identified and expressions of interest for sponsorship already received. This three day conference promises to
be an important forum to express and discuss

Technical Visits
17 February 2010.
The eMalahleni Mine Water Reclamation Plant was originally established as a R300-million joint initiative between Anglo Coal South Africa and BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa (Becsa). This plant treats polluted mine water from underground workings to deliver potable and process water to the eMalahleni Municipality and surrounding mining operations. The project, which was commissioned in 2007, desalinates rising underground water from Anglo Coal’s Landau, Greenside and Kleinkopie Collieries, as well as from Becsa’s defunct South Witbank Mine. It prevents polluted mine water from decanting into the environment and the local river system, whilst also easing severe operational and safety challenges. The plant produces on average, over 25-million litres/day of potable-quality water, with a 99.4% water recovery.
This plant is a state-of-the-art active mine water treatment plant that incorporates physico-chemical pre-treatment, reverse osmosis desalination with extremely high water recoveries achieved through innovative process design, with the benefit of minimizing the volumes of brines and sludge to be managed and disposed of. The site visit will include an overview of the process design and construction phases, together with a tour through the actual operating plant.
Please note the site visit is subject to suffient interest and will be limited to 20 attendees
