Background

The energy-intensive industry of manganese (Mn) ferroalloy production is one of the largest producers of direct carbon emissions. The demand for ferromanganese alloy, an additive of steel, follows the demand for steel and continues to increase. This means Mn ore and the production of Mn ferroalloys form an integral part in a future energy sector based on renewable energy technologies. Major structural features of wind turbines, solar panels, and energy storage devices are all made of steel components.

The current industrial practices and state-of-the-art in Mn ferroalloy production are heavily dependent on the use of fossil-based carbon. The 5th SAIMM school on Mn ferroalloy production thus aims to bring together industry and research in order to support smelters and foster collaborations between researchers towards adopting the transition of decarbonizing the ferroalloy industry.
The conversation around the topic will shed light on some of the fundamentals and industrial integration of the various decarbonization strategies.

 

OBJECTIVE

  • To create a platform to discuss the environmental impact of carbon emissions from the production of Mn ferroalloys.
  • To provide the opportunity for industrialists and researchers to exchange views on the decarbonization of the Mn ferroalloy industry.
  • To further enhance collaborations between parties.

Keynote speakers

Tanisha Grace Schultz,
Research Analyst, Project Blue

Tanisha Schultz 25032024Tanisha Schultz is a Research Analyst at Project Blue, specializing in the global manganese and chrome markets. In her current role, Tanisha conducts in-depth market research and data analysis, identifies key trends, and generates actionable intelligence to support informed decision-making for clients across the value chain. Her research includes market analysis, forecasting, cost modelling and ESG analysis. She is a regular speaker at international conferences on the subject of ferroalloys and energy transition. Tanisha completed her Master of Science degree in 2021 and joined Project Blue in 2022. She is a member of the Society of Economic Geologists and the Geological Society of South Africa.


Maria Wallin 30042024Dr Maria Wallin,
Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

Dr. Ing. Maria Wallin is a chemical engineer with a PhD in Material Science from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden (2014). She has worked as Product Developer at Profilmic and as a Quality and Management consultant at Knightec before she joined NTNU in 2017. Dr. Wallin is currently working as a researcher and her focus areas are in production, recycling and refining of metals from stable oxides. Dr Wallin is the administrative coordinator of three EU-projects; HAlMan, SisAl Pilot and HydroMetEC. She is also active as work package leader or partner in the following EU projects ReSiLex, Thermobat, SUNSON and HARARE.
