Technical visit

SAIMM PGM Conference Technical Visit
Sponsored by Royal Bafokeng Platinum
4 November 2022

Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat) is a mid-tier platinum group metals (PGMs) producer, originating from a joint venture between Anglo American Platinum and Royal Bafokeng Holdings (RBH) known as the Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum mine joint venture (BRPM JV).
In 2018 RBPlat became the 100% owner of its business, following the acquisition of the 33% portion of the BRPM JV from Anglo American Platinum.
RBPlat mines platinum group metals in the Merensky and UG2 reefs on the Boschkoppie, Styldrift and Frischgewaagd farms in the Rustenburg area. Our Merensky resources have been identified as last remaining undeveloped shallow high grade Merensky reef on the Western limb of the Bushveld complex.
RBPlat operations are comprised of two mines and two concentrators employing approximately 11 000 personnel. Our concentrators have a current combined capacity of 4.9 million tonnes per annum. Mining operations consist of BRPM Mine, with two decline shafts and Styldrift Mine.
BRPM uses both conventional scattered breast and hybrid mining methods to produce approximately 2.4 million tonnes of ore per annum yielding an average of 260koz 4E platinum group metals in concentrate. Current Merensky and UG2 resources of 15Moz 4E support a remaining life of mine in excess of 20 years.
Styldrift is a twin vertical shaft (average mining depth of 680m), fully mechanised mine with a design output of 2.76 million tonnes per annum, yielding an estimated 320koz 4E platinum group metals in concentrate at steady state. The mine will exploit both the Merensky and UG2 orebodies over its life, which, with a combined resource of 25.5Moz supports a life of mine in excess of 40 years.
In addition to being a fully mechanised operation, the mine is also being equipped with necessary IT infrastructure, systems and resources to secure a digitally optimised future. This will enable Styldrift to achieve ongoing improvements in safety, health and operational efficiencies cementing its position in the industry as a modern world class mine.
Our strategy is underpinned by our keen focus on sustainability and our aspiration of achieving ‘More than Mining’ and is defined by our purpose of creating economic value for all our stakeholders. SAIMM Styldrift Mine Visit_04 November 2022
