SAIMM is proud to host the Second Copper Cobalt Africa Conference in the heart of Africa.

To be held in Livingstone, Zambia, this anticipated and prestigious event provides a unique forum for discussion, sharing of experience and knowledge, and networking for all those interested in the processing of copper and cobalt in an African context, in one of the world’s most spectacular settings - the Victoria Falls.

The African Copper Belt is again experiencing a resurgence of activity following the commodity downturn of recent years. A significant proportion of capital spending, project development, operational expansions, and metal value production in the Southern African mining industry take place in this region. The geology and mineralogy of the ores are significantly different to those in other major copper-producing regions of the world, often having very high grades as well as the presence of cobalt.

Both mining and metallurgy present some unique challenges, not only in the technical arena, but also with respect to logistics and supply chain, human capital, community engagement, and legislative issues. This conference provides a platform for discussion of a range of topics, spanning the value chain from exploration, projects, through mining and processing, to recycling and secondary value addition.

For international participants, this conference offers an ideal opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of and exposure to the African copper and cobalt industries, and to better understand the various facets of mining and processing in this part of the world.

Jointly hosted by the Mining and Metallurgy Technical Programme Committees of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), this conference aims to:
- Promote dialogue between the mining and metallurgical disciplines on common challenges facing the industry
- Enhance understanding of new and existing technologies that can lead to safe and optimal resource utilization
- Encourage participation and build capacity amongst young and emerging professionals from the Copper Belt region.

The organizing committee looks forward to your participation.

hydro short

An unprecedented increase in demand for cobalt used in energy-storage devices is expected to soon result in large deficits between supply and demand. This will inevitably lead to a global focus on Africa, particularly the African Copper Belt, as this region possesses close to half of the world’s cobalt resources. In the Copper Belt, cobalt is associated with copper production, in contrast to the second-largest global source associated with nickel production. In both cases, cobalt is recovered from solutions following dissolution of the primary metals. Hydrometallurgy technologies are therefore considered for this duty.

These hydrometallurgical technologies are the subject of this one-day short course. The topics include metal dissolution (leaching), upgrading and purification (precipitation, solvent extraction, ion exchange), and metal recovery (crystallization, electrowinning, metal salt production) processes. Each topic will be presented by a world-renowned expert in the field.

The short course will be accredited for one Continuing Professional Development (CPD) point by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

first quantumKansanshi Mining PLC is majority owned by First Quantum Minerals, which currently operates seven mines and one copper smelter and is developing four projects worldwide. The company produces copper, nickel, gold and zinc.

Kansanshi was commissioned in 2005. It is the largest copper mine in Africa and the 8th largest in the world, with capacity of 340 kt/a Cu (210 kt by SXEW), and 130,000 oz/a Au. Copper production in 2017 was 250801 t.

A one-day post-conference technical tour will enable a limited number of delegates (maximum 28) to visit the diversified Kansanshi operation in Solwezi, Zambia. The tour is accredited for one Continuing Professional Development (CPD) point with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).

Kansanshi1Kansanshi operations

Mining is carried out in two open pits using conventional open-pit methods and employing hydraulic excavators and a fleet of haul trucks. Ore treatment is flexible to allow for variation in ore type, with processing possible through an oxide circuit, a sulphide circuit, and a transitional ore ‘mixed float’ circuit, with facilities to beneficiate flotation concentrate to final cathode.

Sulphide ore is treated by crushing, milling, and flotation to produce copper concentrate. Oxide ore is treated via crushing, milling, flotation, leaching, and SX/EW process to produce sulphidic and gold-bearing flotation concentrates as well as electrowon cathode copper. The hydrometallurgical circuit employs both pressure and atmospheric leaching steps, and has five SX circuits and three tankhouses. The site also has its own dedicated acid plants.

Gold is recovered by gravity concentrators and Gemini tables. A high-grade concentrate is produced for direct smelting to gold bullion.

Commissioning of the Kansanshi smelter commenced in Q3 2014, and first anodes were cast in December 2014. The smelter achieved commercial production in July 2015. Primary processing steps include smelting, converting, fire refining and casting.

The smelter has a nominal capacity of 1.2 million tonnes per annum of concentrate to produce over 300 kt/a copper metal and more than 1.0 million t/a of sulphuric acid as a by-product. Acid production from the smelter permits the Kansanshi process plant to treat mixed cleaner tails through the leaching circuit and produce additional cathode.

Kansanshi2Tour arrangements

Following an early airport transfer from the conference venue, delegates will fly with Proflight Charters from Livingstone to Solwezi on Friday 13 July and return to Livingstone in the early evening. Road transfers in Solwezi will be by bus, courtesy of Kansanshi Mine.

Ten Other Reasons to Visit Livingstone

Ten Other Reasons to Visit Livingstone

1. Cultural Richness

Considered the gateway between Southern and Central Africa, Livingstone is a lively city, brimming with carts and locals chatting away in Tongo, Bemba, Nyanja or one of 73 other languages spoken in Zambia. In contrast to the northern Copper Belt region, there is a much more Western feel to Livingstone; you see businessmen in suits, there's cold beer sold by vendors, and it's easy to get a nice, warm shower. The infrastructure of the city is sound, and is a wonderful place for travellers to relax and share exciting stories, before venturing back into the unknown reaches of Zambia.

2. Natural Wonderland

Though famous for its National Park, river, and the mighty Victoria Falls, in and of itself Livingstone is an essential stop on any itinerary. The National Park is home to Zambia's only five rare white rhinos, and the majestic Zambezi rushes through its boundaries. There are a number of adrenalin-packed adventures available to experience the beautiful natural wonders of Zambia, and thrills that will last a lifetime. This is a place to find the perfect blend of natural African wonder and accommodating, enriching city-life; all rolled into one. White water rafting is just another popular pastime amongst adventurous travellers.

3. Relaxation

Even with all the wonderful activities that are on offer in the area, Livingstone is also a fabulous place to sit around, relax, and enjoy a beer. Those who are on business in Africa find this city to be a wonderful place to loosen their ties and kick back for a while. With a number of local restaurants and cafes, it's easy to slow down and enjoy the wonderful climate and beautiful natural surroundings. Bring your book, sit by the pool, and have a little rest before you tackle the more exciting outings that abound.

4. Victoria Falls

No trip to Livingstone is complete without beholding the majesty of Victoria Falls, certified as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. During high season from February to June, the Falls are a veritable ball of smoke and spray. The energy-charged waters are a wonder, and it seems as though you could visit the falls for a full day and simply drink in the dramatic splendour. It gives one the sense of how powerful Mother Nature is, and what she's truly capable of.

5. Lunar Rainbow

The lunar rainbow is a natural phenomenon that all travellers look forward to seeing in Livingstone's night sky. When it is clear out, and Victoria Falls is running at its peak capacity, there are enormous rainbows emitted through the mysterious mist of the night. Some great ways to see it are to be table-side at a restaurant that overlooks the falls, or enjoy a backpacking trip that has a special night expedition, allowing you to soak in the beauty of the majestic night rainbow. Oddly enough, the lunar rainbow photographs quite well, and travellers scramble to capture the beauty on film.

6. Zambian Sunsets

Zambia is known for its tranquil, colourful sunsets, and there are several great spots in Livingstone to see the impressive lights of dusk. A great place for a viewing is atop the Batoka Gorge, where it's possible to see as far as Zimbabwe, and also take in a glimpse of the Zambezi and the spray of the distant Victoria Falls. Pop open a cold beer, bring a lawn chair, and just drink it all in. It's the perfect finish to a long day of sightseeing and adventure.

7. Crocodile and Snake Park

If you want to see some amazing reptiles, the Crocodile Park is not to be missed. There is also a nice selection of poisonous snakes on display. What better way to view these terrifying and fascinating creatures up-close and personal? If you really want to see something amazing, go Saturday or Sunday, when the animals are fed. That's a sight that will not soon be forgotten.

8. Mukuni Village

Just outside of Livingstone is where the Toka-Leya people have their charming village open for display. You really get to see the day-to-day life and traditions of these lively people. With a population of just about 8000, it's possible to walk amongst the visitors, and be a fly on the wall. It's best to ask before taking photographs, and remember to always be kind and courteous to the locals.

9. Maramba Market

Maramba Market is the place to find pretty much everything under the sun for purchase. The rows of endless stalls are brimming with vintage clothing, fresh produce and dried beans, as well as bikes, backpacks, and other goods. The people here are quite friendly, but it is always suggested that you should dress modestly in these areas of town. Pick up some snacks from street vendors, and find some souvenirs as well. This is a wonderful place to simply stroll and take it all in.

10. Exciting Museums

There are a number of fabulous museums in Livingstone, and in particular, the Livingstone Museum is perhaps the most popular. See the displays highlighting Zambia's independence, witchcraft, crafts, and David Livingstone memorabilia. The Victoria Falls Field Museum is also a nice spot, focusing on the local people surrounding the Falls, as well as the unique geology of the area.

Other Social Activities

Other Social Activities

Whether your preference is for an adrenalin rush (white-water rafting, jet-boating, helicopter rides and microlighting) or for more sedate activities (elephant back riding, walking with lions, or dining on an old rail coach), you are sure to find plenty to do in Livingstone. Prices, details, and bookings are available at the hotel reception.

Livingstone Island

Dr. David Livingstone was paddled in a dugout canoe through swift rapids towards the roar and rising cloud of mist above a cliff over which the whole of the Zambezi River plunged. The Makololo paddlers skilfully landed him on Goat Island (now Livingstone Island), right on the lip of the chasm.

Today, visitors can re-trace Livingstone’s approach to the island to witness the very best view of the Falls there is. A superb meal is served on the island and afterwards a guided walk is conducted along the edge of the Falls. Probably the most unique venue for a meal in the world, this is an ideal concept for a company wishing to treat their clients to something special.

s2

Travel Tips

Travel Tips

Flights
Livingstone is served by daily flights from Johannesburg by South African Airways and British Airways.

Visas
All visitors to Zambia must be in possession of a passport valid for at least six months from their date of departure. Citizens of South Africa and Zimbabwe can obtain Zambian visas upon arrival for free. All other foreign passport holders are required to pay for their visas on arrival. A single entry visa fee of USD 50 in cash can be paid on arrival in Livingstone. For updated information, please visit www.zambiaimmigration.gov.com.

Yellow Fever Certificates
As of January 2015, Yellow Fever Certificates are no longer required for entry into Zambia.

Malaria
Zambia is a malaria area. Although the conference is taking place in the winter months and the Livingstone area has low a mosquito risk, precautions are advised. Malaria-carrying mosquitoes only bite after dark. Personal prevention is the best protection:

- Always wear long sleeves and trousers in the late afternoon and at night.
- Spray mosquito repellent onto exposed skin areas after dark.
- Sleep in an air-conditioned room or under a fan or mosquito net.
- Keep all windows and doors closed after dark.
- Take preventative daily medication on the advice of your doctor or travel clinic.

Weather
July is the start of the main dry season, traditionally the best time to visit Livingstone and for viewing the falls. There should be virtually no rainfall. The mean maximum daily temperature is 26oC, while night-time temperatures drop to about 6oC.

Electrical
Voltage: 230 V
Frequency: 50 Hz
Power sockets: type C / D / G

There is no consistency in what type of plug sockets you may find at different locations, so be prepared for all of those illustrated below.

Internet Access
Internet access can be patchy and intermittent in Zambia, but is improving all the time. The conference venue should have adequate internet access, but be aware that this may not always be 100% reliable.

Money Matters
Zambia’s unit of currency is the Zambian Kwacha (ZMW). Payments within Zambia can be made in Kwachas only, by law, even if the price is quoted in USD. Foreign currency will not be accepted once you have cleared immigration at the airport.

To find out the current exchange rate, please visit www.xe.com.

ATMs are available within Lusaka, Livingstone and other major towns in Zambia. The bigger banks have ATMs which accept Visa (but not MasterCard) for cash.

Most hotels, restaurants, travel agencies and the bigger shops will take credit cards. Most of the bigger banks will advance local currency against a credit card. Visa is more readily accepted than MasterCard or American Express. If you plan on paying by credit card, be advised that high commissions are sometimes charged.

It is best to come into the country with either US Dollars or Pounds, which can be exchanged at any of the many Bureaux de Change in the main towns. If you are offered an exchange on the black market at the borders, exercise extreme caution as they are notorious for cheating you without you even realizing it.

Tipping
Tipping in Zambia is entirely at your discretion but, as a guideline, 10% is standard for meals and services.

Drinking Water
It is generally ill-advised to drink tap water anywhere in Zambia. You can buy bottled water at most shops, both in larger towns and at roadside markets, and it’s not expensive. The hotel provides 500 ml per person per day free of charge in the rooms.

Safety and Security
Zambians are generally very friendly and helpful, but, as in any tourist destination the world over, petty theft can be problematic. Risks to personal safety are very low.

It is recommended that you don’t walk around carrying anything of value like your passport or airline tickets. Carry minimum amounts of cash and keep it hidden or in a money belt. Never change money on the streets. Use the safe deposit boxes in the hotel rooms.
