INTRODUCTION TO ETHICS & ETHICAL DECISION-MAKING

This one-day, in-person ECSA accredited Introduction to Ethics course, is the first in a three-part series. This introductory course serves to introduce the candidate to Ethics and Ethical decision-making and how it can shape both our personal and professional lives.
This is an interactive course that covers the definition of ethics, moral agency and the ancient and modern ethical approaches which often unconsciously serve to support our ethical decision-making.
Candidates will learn how as moral agents; they are expected to undertake ethical decision-making as a means of resolving ethical dilemmas and ethical conflicts whether personal or professional.
Case studies will conclude the course as a means of providing examples of ethical decision-making.
This introductory course is divided into 6 Ethics study modules over the course of the day.
Each module will consist of 1 hour of lectured material including time allocated for questions from candidates.
The following study modules will make up the programme for our one day in-person Introduction to Ethics & Ethical Decision-Making.

INTERMEDIARY COURSE ON ETHICS & PROFESSIONALISM

This one-day, in-person ECSA accredited Intermediary Ethics & Professionalism course, is the second in a three-part series. This intermediary course serves to introduce the candidate to the concept of Professionalism, and Professional codes of conduct in terms of their ethical expectations and real-life application.
This is an interactive course that covers the definition of Professionalism & the ECSA code of Professional conduct, Public Engagement, Risk and Mitigation strategies and Whistleblowing.
Candidates will learn how Professional Codes of conduct expect and exact specific qualifications, ethics and professional behaviours from their members whilst also encouraging them to interact with the wider community through public forums when community projects are being planned and proposed.
This Intermediary in-person course is divided into 6 study modules over the course of the day.
Each module will consist of 1 hour of lectured material including time allocated for questions from candidates. The following study modules will make up the programme for our one day in-person Intermediary course on Ethics & Professionalism.

ADVANCED COURSE IN ETHICS CASE STUDIES

This one-day, in-person ECSA accredited Introduction This one-day, in-person ECSA accredited Advanced course in Ethics Case Studies serves, through the use of real-life examples, to demonstrate the importance of ethics in both our personal and professional lives.
This is an interactive course that brings to a conclusion the 3-part SAIMM Ethics Course in teaching how ethics shape our understandings, opinions and actions at home and in the workplace. The impact of extrinsic forces will also form part of this course and the role they can play in supporting, opposing, or even sabotaging our ethical decision-making.
Candidates will briefly re-visit ethical approaches before interrogating case studies to see how they conform with ethical approaches, or how they are deficient in ethics. As will be demonstrated through case study outcomes, the lack of ethics can often lead to unsatisfactory and even fatal consequences.
This Advanced in-person course on Ethics in Case Studies is divided into 6 study modules over the course of the day.

Prior to her return to academia in 2010, Dr Doherty had a successful career in local and international marketing. Brands under management included Trivial Pursuit®; Star Wars®; Five Roses®; Willards®; Johnson Wax Rally® and Pennzoil®
Dr Doherty was the head of Complementary studies in the School of Mechanical, Industrial and Aeronautical
Engineering at Wits from 2013 until 2024 where she became a regional expert in Engineering Ethics. She authored a book “Engineering Ethics in Southern Africa: Theories & Cases published in 2023 by Juta Publishing, which is recommended by Universities who have an ECSA accredited Engineering programme.
Her academic interests lie in Ethics, Philosophy, Business Management and Organisational Behaviour and she now guest lectures in industry.
