Introduction

INTRODUCTION

The Colloquium on Renewable Solutions for an Energy Intensive Industry will provide an overview of renewable technologies for electricity and process heat commercially available and currently under development. The workshop will host presentations from universities, research institutes and energy supply companies. Presentations from industry on renewable energy applications are also invited.

Global agreements to aim for less than 2°C global warming requires CO2 emissions to achieve net zero by 2060. Energy intensive industries are often criticized for lack of emissions reductions. In addition, carbon tax and its implications for industry necessitates an evaluation of alternatives to fossil fuel use. This colloquium strives to have an open discussion on the technologies available, the barriers to their implementation and how to overcome them.

Announcing PReMA project sponsorship of the Renewable Solutions for Energy Intensive Industry Colloquium:
The PReMA project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under Grant Agreement No 820561 to investigate solar thermal preheating technology in manganese ferroalloy production in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and electricity consumption. Come fi nd out about these and other renewable solutions at the Colloquium.

Type of Event

TYPE OF EVENT

At this point in time, the event is planned as a hybrid conference with international participation, which will allow for contact and online attendance and presentation. We are still in Stage 1 Lock down in South Africa as a result of COVID-19. We will monitor the situation, and if it appears that the effects of the pandemic are still such as to pose a threat to the health and safety of delegates, or restrictions are lifted to allow for more contact participation and international travel, the event delivery method will be adjusted accordingly.

Please submit your abstracts and papers as these will be peer reviewed and published for all contact and hybrid/online conferences.

Objective

To provide an opportunity for energy intensive industry to engage with companies and researchers in the renewable energy field. To inform on the state of technology development and promote the adoption of renewable energy solutions.

The colloquium is aimed at delegates from industry operating mines, smelters, kilns and other minerals processing units requiring heating, cooling or electricity and includes:

• Process/development engineers

Speakers

Daniele La Porta
World Bank Group

Daniele La Porta is a Senior Mining Specialist with the Energy and Extractives Global Practice of the World Bank, where she works on mineral sector governance and sustainable development in mineral rich developing countries. In this role, she manages projects in Sierra Leone, Brazil, and Liberia. She also leads the Bank’s knowledge products on innovative areas, such as Climate-Smart Mining, Deep Sea Mining, and the preparation of innovative Public-Private Partnerships in the water and mining sectors. Daniele has extensive experience working with developing countries to ensure natural resources achieve more sustainable outcomes. She advises and works with governments on institutional reforms and crafting strong governance policies. Daniele also has experience in mineral exploration and development.

Daniele is a Brazilian with degrees in Geology and Environmental Management.

INVITED SPEAKER

Paul Gauche
Heliogen, Inc.
Vice President, Heliogen Labs

Paul is a mechanical engineer with over 25 years of R&D experience in start-up, large corporation and academic environments spanning solar energy, semiconductors, and engineering simulation software. As President of Heliogen Labs, Paul is responsible for the R&D roadmap, the innovation pipeline, and IP portfolio of the company. Previously, Paul managed the Concentrating Solar Power program at Sandia National Labs and founded the STERG research group at Stellenbosch University where he obtained his PhD.
