Full name(s) and surname: Katlego Letsoalo

Position: Vice-Chairperson

What contribution do you see yourself making to the Young Professionals Council and the SAIMM?:

I believe I have managed to build a solid network that is still growing within mining companies and various government entities. My involvement in the YPC would allow me to bring various stakeholders to contribute to the achievement of the long term vision and goals of the organisation. I believed my contribution was evident in the success of the YPC conference hosted this year.

I think it is worth noting that the mining industry’s absorption of graduates over recent years has declined. I think I can contribute to the group by looking into solutions that would address graduate employment to a certain degree.

Interactions/activities that you currently participate in within the SAIMM (if applicable):

I am involved in various working groups within the YPC, this includes the Enterprise and Career group.

I serve on the committee that organised the 2017 YPC conference chairing the sponsorship team and I currently serve on the committee organising the Enterprise conference.

Qualifications:

  • Masters of Science in Engineering (Currently Enrolled)
  • Btec Mining Engineering

Brief career history:

I began my career in the mining industry in 2009 as a BHP Billiton bursary student working within the manganese business unit. During this period I was exposed to mechanised mining. I later completed my studies in mining engineering. As part of my training for professional tickets, I went to AngloGold Ashanti Mponeng as learner official. This exposed to conventional and mechanised deep-level underground mining.

In 2016 I joined the Chamber of mines of South Africa as a modernisation and safety intern. My current role involves liaising with the mining industry and equipment manufacturers on new technology, conducting baseline studies on various technologies and narrow reef projects. I am also involved in various industry committees including MHSC and The Mining Hub.

Date and place of birth:
