What contribution do you see yourself making to the Young Professionals Council and the SAIMM?:

  • The primary intent is to establish a strong network between upcoming to senior professionals in the mining industry with an objective of idea exchange yielding innovative idea(s) implementation to ensure safety and sustainability of our mines. A strong network in this context means ensuring functional information exchange channels to prepare the industry dynamic response to economic climate which may potentially repel investments into the mining sector. This goes up to exposing youth to the mining value chain and implications thereof on localised to global economies.

Interaction/activities that you currently participate in within the SAIMM (if applicable):

  • Member of council SAIMM YPC North West (Marketing and Treasury)

  • Member of council SAIMM North West Branch (Vice Chairperson)

  • Continually encouraging graduates to join SAIMM and indulge on platforms for innovative ideas presentation and exchange which may help transform as well as sustain the mining industry.

  • Certificate of Competency Mine Planning Software

Brief career history:

  • Tandile started his mining career at Impala Platinum Rustenburg operations when he joined the mining graduate programme. He went up the ranks up to supervisory level. He then joined mine planning specialisation to senior level. He is now an accomplished Mining Engineer with extensive underground mining and technical experience in both conventional and trackless mining. He is always looking for into innovative ideas to make mining safer and profitable.

Born in Mthatha on 28th August 1990.

What are your views on the 4th industrial revolution?

This is a winning formula in current times and saving the economy as well as environment. The world revolves meaning challenges vary, 4th industrial revolution is a solution to mitigate such hence we need to learn and take advantage of it in the mining sector.

If you were a precious metal what would you be and why?

I would be Platinum metal because of I would then be used extensively in emerging technology and environmentally friendly solutions

How do you think industry bodies such as the SAIMM can better equip young professionals such as yourself?

By continually opening and expanding idea exchange platforms across the mining industry irrespective of commodities mined. This helps sharpening skills and expertise in respective mining fields therefore with this, the industry propels to the best direction for future stability.

How do you see young professionals making a significant change in the industry?

When young minds gather, excellence prevails. Young professionals have a huge role to transform the industry through research, analysis and implementation. They are more than capable to achieve this especially with sufficient resources in place.

What gets you up in the morning?

The great feeling of being granted another chance to better myself so I can continue to empower those around me.
