    The Journal is the organ of The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, which is the professional body dealing with the interests of managers, engineers and technical and research personnel involved in the mining and minerals industry.

    The Journal, published since 1894, is issued monthly, and is sent to the individual members and company affiliates of the SAIMM. Complimentary copies are sent to a wide range of local and overseas companies, universities, research organizations and libraries. Both hard copy and an electronic copy of the Journal are made available.

    Rightfully claiming to be the leading mineral industry publication in South Africa, the Journal has high standards both of content and presentation. All papers are peer reviewed and recognized by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and cited by Thomson ISI (formerly the Institute for Scientific Information). It provides its readers with vital information related to the SAIMM and the mineral industry, reports on day-to-day mining operations and practices, and on improvements in technology and equipment.

    The Journal contains papers that are selected from conferences that are run by the SAIMM and papers that are submitted by individual authors from around the world. The papers are reviewed by two referees who have been nominated by the Publications Committee.

    The published papers are recognised by the South African Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and are indexed or summarised by:

Kabelo Mosebi 30102024Mr. Kabelo Mosebi is a Mining Engineer by Profession, Managing Director for Blue Horizon Resources (Pty) Ltd. and Director for Pineshare (Pty) Ltd and Broad Horizon Group. Mr. Mosebi is a husband to Mrs. Ludo Mosebi and father of three daughters. He identifies his personal purpose with being a helper and with very strong belief system. The person purpose form part of a strong personal philosophy that has influenced Mr. Mosebi’s success in both profession and social aspects of life.

Mr. Mosebi holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) Degree in Mineral Engineering (Mining) from the University of Toronto, Canada and graduated in 2010. He has just over thirteen (13) years working experience in the Mining Industry. He has previously worked for Debswana Diamond Company and AECI Mining at Jwaneng Mine from 2010 to 2021. During that time, he participated in the Final Wall Control Project which improved final wall compliance score from about 20% to 90%. He then joined Debswana, Jwaneng Mine in 2015 as a Mining Engineer and went through the different ranks to the of Mining Manager position at the time he left to start his own firm. He was part of the execution of the Dip Slope Mining project, which ensured the stability of the Cut 8 Slopes as one of the unique mining methods. He was part of the team that presented a technical paper for publishing on Dip Slope Mining to a worldwide audience at Slope Stability Symposium that was held in Spain, April 2018. Before then, he was involved in a project to re-design Cut 8 and optimize the slopes, the results of which saved the Cut 8 business case at Jwaneng Mine.

While studying in Canada, some thirteen years ago, Mr. Mosebi developed a deep desire to give back to the community, following his involvement with several on-campus clubs activities in the community. This involve being a Vice-President for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) for the University of Toronto chapter in 2009 – 2010.

Back home in Botswana, he shared his vision with friends, and they founded a society called Youth Empowerment Society (YES), registered with Botswana Registrar of Societies in April 2008. YES, targets youth (age 13 to 35) in and outside school communities to address the declining educational performance, decline in employability skills, increase in youth violence and a concerning number of youth infected and affected by the HIV & AIDS in Botswana.

Mr Mosebi has now developed a great desire to speak and that is why he is here to speak and make a difference in lives of those who have potential to lead the nation today and tomorrow. He is a member of the Council of The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) and a Member of Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM).
