Impala Platinum Smelter Off Gas Plant

Impala Platinum Smelter situated 25 km outside Rustenburg South Africa have upgraded their SO2 abatement equipment in 2008/2009 which
now consist of the following equipment:

  • an upgraded contact sulphuric acid plant treating the Peirce Smith Converter off gas
  • an activated carbon catalyst Sulfacid„¢ Plant treating all the electric furnace off gas
  • a Dynawave lime scrubber treating the combined tail gas from the Sulphuric Acid and Sulfacid„¢ Plant
  • a Dynawave lime scrubber treating the captured fugitive off gasses from the Peirce Smith Converter secondary hooding

Conference attendees which want to visit Impala Platinum must bring their own personal protective equipment (PPE) consisting of Acid Proof
overall jackets or overcoats (denim or similar pants are sufficient - no dresses or shirts), safety shoes, safety glasses, ear protection and hard hats.
