South Africa has the largest land-based Mn-ore reserves and is the 3rd largest producer of high carbon ferromanganese and 4th largest producer of medium and low carbon ferromanganese-according data for 2009 obtained from IMnI. Prof. Merete Tangstad is currently leading a research group at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway which focuses on research related to manganese ferroalloy production.
The aim of the course is to transfer the knowledge she gained through her work to role players in the South African manganese ferroalloy industry. In order to reach this goal Merete will address the following topics during the two day school:
- History of manganese
- Alloy specification and uses
- Raw materials
- Commercial production ofmanganese ferroalloys
- Manganese thermodynamics
- Physical properties of manganese slags
- The FeMn process-theoretical considerations
- The SiMn process-theoretical considerations
- Refining of manganese alloys
- Environmental aspects

About the Lecturer
MERETE TANGSTAD
Professor at NTNU
(Norwegian University of Science and Technology)
Merete took her Master degree and PhD degree at NTNU. In the following years, she worked forElkem and Eramet,
mostly within ferro-manganese and silico-manganese production, and mainly with research within these processes.
Since 2004, she has been a professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology within Material Science
and Engineering, with the main emphasis on manganese ferro-alloy production, and upgrading metallurgical silicon
to solar-grade silicon.
Merete is co-author of the definitive textbook on manganese ferroalloy production, Production of Manganese Ferroalloys, published by Tapir Press in Norway.
Who should attend
Southern African delegates from the manganese ferro-alloy industry or those who support them, targeting
companies that fund new manganese projects:
- Existing and potential industry role players
- Engineering companies
- Research/academic institutions
- Companies providing funding for new manganese projects
