The first edition of Rock Engineering For Underground Coal Mining was published in 2002 as a joint venture between SIMRAC and the SAIMM. The hard copy of the book was sold out in just a few months.

Apart from being used on the mines by managers and rock engineers, the book is also one of the recommended references for the Certificate of Competency as Mine Manager for coal mines.

There have, over the last years, been considerable interest in a second edition both locally and from overseas coal miners.

Nielen van der Merwe and Bernard Madden have now updated the text and the book is ready for publication as a second edition.

The launch will be accompanied by a one-day refresher school in underground coal mining rock engineering, with the emphasis on the new material that has been added to the book.

The changes for the second edition, apart from correcting the inevitable few printing errors, are the following:

• Chapter on Shallow Mining has been added
• Chapter on Geotechnical Classification has been enhanced
• Linear strength formula has been added
• Life prediction of pillars has been added
• In the appendix on roof support the section on the design procedure for beam creation has been re-written and all formulae are now provided in both the simplified and fundamental versions.
• Several example calculations have been added to the Appendices
