The theme of this first geometallurgy conference “Back to the future” is inspired by looking both into the past and the future: the concept of Geometallurgy goes back to some of the earliest mining activities when mineral recognition, mining, separation and concentration were undertaken simultaneously. Over time, changes in operational structures, product expansion and specialisation ultimately led to the diminishment and breakdown of this holistic approach.
In the last two decades ‘Geometallurgy’ has become a sophisticated yet entirely logical return to this integrated approach to mine planning. In a world of exponentially increasing ore heterogeneity and economic complexity, Geometallurgy is effectively a highly structured, integrated multi-disciplinary collaboration for optimising the value of an ore deposit. The approach is premised on acquiring multi-dimensional, spatially constrained (blocked) ore body knowledge that quantifies and qualifies all aspects of ore body variability. This data must include each element’s response to blasting, excavation, crushing, grinding, separability and the environment and of course, its economic factors. These discrete elemental data sets are modelled to optimise a mine plan which takes into account the respective threshold criteria for each of the dataset components. Geometallurgy provides for truly integrated mine planning, ore flow management and processing from exploration to operations and through to final closure and rehabilitation. (Think of it as 4D Whittle on steroids, but for the entire mine life cycle, not just the optimised pit or stope envelope for the mining operation).
Looking into the future, we need to visualise what our ‘ideal’ mining operation in Southern Africa should look like, how it will function, and be equipped to articulate what we need to do to achieve this. Geometallurgy is a critical tool in achieving this.
Ore variability and complexity are innate characteristics of the ores we treat:
“Neither geologists, mining engineers, nor metallurgists can change the fact that all ore deposits are zoned with respect to metal grades, mineralogy, mineral abundances, mineral textures and other parameters such as physical hardness, all of which impact on the treatment costs and recovery of metals as an ore deposit is progressively mined and depleted” (Woodall 2007)
Managing the risks of ore variability across the life of mine requires a holistic geometallurgical approach:
“the philosophy of bigger picture mining is being implemented where the team is given an understanding in all areas of the mining chain, from the geology, through the mining methods and how the ore is processed. This knowledge is especially essential for geologists who are the link between the mine and the processing plant” (Butler et al. 2016)
Mine planning engineers in short-, medium- and long-term planning have direct access to geometallurgical characteristics via the geometallurgical block model and outputs of their mine scheduling software ….it is now accepted that mine schedules contain not only tons and grade of revenue elements, but grades of deleterious minerals and other feed characteristics that influence recovery, reagent consumption and processing costs” (Leibezeit et al. 2016)
This can deliver significant financial value:
“improvement in the project financial metrics, particular a 13 percent increase in NPV and a five per cent reduction in capital intensity” (King & Macdonald, 2016)
“US$ 127 million improvement in the NPV of the operation is apparent in the revised plan” (Macfarlane & Williams, 2014)

An interactive workshop on ore to metals optimization that demonstrates the application of geometallurgy
6 August 2018
Lagoon Beach Conference Venue, Cape Town, South Africa
Download: Geomet Workshop Announcement and Programme 28062018.pdf
The optimization of the minerals value chain is a holistic approach towards more economically and environmentally sustainable operations.
The concept is based on value creation over the whole mining and mineral processing chain.
Ore to metals optimization combines the use of mineralogical data, geometallurgical modelling and powerful advanced process simulation from minerals to final payable metal. The optimization uses detailed geometallurgical characterization of the ore domains, and concentrator plant models integrated as a digital plant that simulates the kinetic behavior of mineral particles in beneficiation processes for each ore types and plant operating scenarios.
This interactive workshop provides insight into the advanced use of Outotec’s HSC Chemistry software modules with some hands-on practical case examples. These exercises include the use of the HSC Chemistry modules and mineral database that carry out functions such as; element-to-mineral conversion, and ore type-based concentrator simulations integrated with Net Smelter Return and Operating Cost calculations.
This workshop is limited to 30 participants, on a first come first serve basis.
