Debtech (Maximum 40 delegates)
De Beers Technologies South Africa, also known as DebTech, invests in research and development to maximize the value and life of the group diamond operations. For more than 35 years, it has led the way in diamond mining technology through the development, supply and support of specialist systems for diamond recovery, security and process monitoring.
Cullinan Mine (Maximum 50 delegates)
The Cullinan kimberlite pipe was discovered in 1902 and open pit mining commenced at the ‘Premier’ mine (as it was then known) in 1903. Ore extraction has been by underground mining methods since 1946. The mine was renamed ‘Cullinan’ as part of its centenary celebrations. Cullinan earned its place in history with the discovery of the Cullinan diamond in 1905, the largest rough gem diamond ever found at 3,106ct, which was cut to form the two most important diamonds in the British Crown Jewels. Many of the world’s most famous diamonds herald from Cullinan, and it continues to produce world-class diamonds under Petra’s stewardship.
In September 2017, Petra completed the construction and commissioning of a modern, fit-for-purpose processing plant at Cullinan, with a throughput capacity of 6Mtpa. The new plant utilises gentler processing methods (comminution via attrition) instead of extensive crushing in the form of autogenous milling and high pressure grinding rolls, which are expected to reduce diamond breakage and improve recoveries across the full spectrum of diamonds, including the larger/exceptional stones for which the mine is renowned (the top-cut of 75mm will cater for diamonds of +3,000ct).
The Technical visit will include a visit to the underground workings as well as the surface including the processing plant.
Ruzow/Marcov Diamond Cutting Works (Maximim 50 people (2 groups of 25))
Ruzow Diamonds was established in 1973 as a diamond dealing company, specializing in large white and fancy coloured diamonds. During the early 1980’s, the company started polishing diamonds, utilizing the skills of second and third generation master diamond cutting craftsmen. Ruzow Diamonds was selected as a DTC sight holder in 1987-1988 through its sister company Court Diamond Cutting Works (Pty) Ltd. In the 90’s, the company spread its wings by joint venturing into mining operations in the Northern Cape and North Western provinces in South Africa and, further afield, in Sierra Leone. Ruzow Diamonds entered the retail and wholesale jewellery market in 2004 by setting up a showroom on its own premises using 18k gold and platinum settings, either hand-made by established jewellers of South Africa or cast settings imported from Turkey and Thailand. Ruzow Diamonds’ trademark cut ‘gorgeous cut’ has been registered in South Africa in September 2004. In December 2004, sister diamond cutting works company Marcov DCW (Pty) Ltd was incorporated under Ruzow Diamonds (Pty) Ltd and provides boutique manufacturing services, specialising in large-size rough and fancy-coloured, high-value diamonds
