BACKGROUND

The Minerals Council South Africa is the premier body representing employers in the mining sector. It represents 90% of all mining operations by value.

The Junior and Emerging Miners Desk (JEMD), a programme in the Minerals Council, represents 38 junior and mid-tier producers as well as exploration/development companies. In addition, the JEMD works closely with mining associations, particularly the South African Diamond Producers Organization (SADPO) and the Clay Brick Association. The JEMD supports its members with a comprehensive programme of work that includes policy lobbying, stakeholder engagement, hosting Webinars, information dissemination, research and mentorship.

Social performance and community engagement have increasingly become more prominent in mining companies’ legal and social licenses to operate. Stakeholder mobilisation and protests have increased as have mine community demands for a greater share of mining benefits.

Accordingly, the Minerals Council has set up both regional and head office initiatives to engage communities in a proactive and constructive manner. The Webinar will unpack some of these initiatives.

Provisional speakers include:

  • Alex Kumalo: Minerals Council, head of Social Performance
  • Herbert Modupi:  Minerals Council, manager Mpumalanga region
  • Carla Hudson: Manager, The Impact Catalyst
  • Representative of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE)

In addition, there will be a panel discussion with Junior mining companies.

There is no charge for this Webinar.
