We learned recently of the passing of Prof Peter Gordon Gaylard, a Retired Fellow of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. He joined the SAIMM as a Student member on 17 November 1965 and received his 50-Year Membership Lapel Badge at the SAIMM Annual General Meeting on 11 August 2016.
Peter studied at the University of the Witwatersrand. He was a retired Chemical Engineer. His corporate career included 28 years of service with Impala Platinum Mines. Peter was a world-renowned expert on platinum group metals.
During his working life he held the following positions:
- Independent Non-Executive Director at BK One Ltd.
- Board member of Directors at BK One Ltd.
- Non-Executive Director at Wesizwe Platinum Ltd.
- Adjunct Professor-Chemical Engineering Department, University of Cape Town
- Research Director at Amira International Ltd.
Peter also served on the Board at Africa Wide Mineral Prospecting & Exploration Pty Ltd. and Bakubung Minerals.
In an article from the Plett-Knysna Herald by Chris van Gass, he was described as a fair, objective and honest gentleman.
Peter is survived by his wife, Mary, three children and four grandchildren.
