What contribution do you see yourself making to the Young Professionals Council and the SAIMM? :
As a student, my primary contribution to the Young Professionals Council and the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) would be centred around enhancing work-integrated learning within the Engineering Faculty. I am passionate about fostering a dynamic and widespread community that nurtures students into accomplished professionals through structured mentorship, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing.
A key focus of my involvement would be to raise awareness of the benefits of active participation in professional communities like SAIMM, where students can seamlessly transition into the industry while gaining valuable exposure to real-world applications of their academic studies. By strengthening this continuum from student to professional, we can ensure that emerging engineers are well-equipped with the skills, insights, and networks necessary to thrive in their careers.
Furthermore, I aim to facilitate consistent and meaningful collaboration between industry professionals and university or college students by getting involved in workshops, and networking sessions that encourage engagement, discussions on industry trends, and opportunities for practical experience. Through these initiatives, students can gain firsthand knowledge from experienced professionals, bridging the gap between academia and the evolving engineering landscape.
Additionally, I would advocate for enhanced partnerships between educational institutions and industry leaders to develop programs that integrate practical learning opportunities, internships, and apprenticeships directly into the curriculum. These initiatives will not only equip students with technical competencies but also instill the soft skills necessary for professional growth and adaptability in an ever-changing industry.
By supporting these efforts, I hope to contribute to a more robust engineering pipeline that produces well-rounded professionals who are deeply embedded in the industry from their formative years. My vision is to cultivate a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and innovation that empowers students to confidently pursue their aspirations while strengthening the engineering profession as a whole.
Interactions/activities that you currently participate in within the SAIMM (if applicable):
New member of SAIMM
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Extraction Metallurgy (Third-year student), focusing on the principles of mineral processing, metallurgical engineering, and advanced extraction techniques.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Psychology, completed in 2019, providing a strong foundation in human performance, behavioural science, and psychological principles applied to athletic and professional environments.
Brief career history:
I am currently employed as a Sales Assistant at Gelmar Furniture Shop, where I work weekends in a casual capacity. In this role, I have developed strong customer service skills, product knowledge, and sales expertise while assisting clients with their furniture and hardware needs.
Prior to this, I spent two years at Jamarmic Pump and Valves, where I gained valuable experience in an engineering environment. During my time there, I developed technical skills related to pump and valve systems, acquired hands-on knowledge of mechanical components, and built an understanding of industry standards and operational procedures. This experience significantly contributed to my practical understanding of engineering principles.
Currently, I have returned to full-time studies in Engineering, where I am furthering my technical knowledge, academic competencies, and problem-solving abilities. My professional experiences, combined with my academic pursuits, have reinforced my passion for engineering and equipped me with the foundational skills necessary to thrive in the industry.
